We recently said goodbye to George Edgar, who began his well-deserved retirement earlier this month. George was WECC’s Executive Director from 1991 until 1999. Since then, he served as our Policy Director.

George’s strong commitment to environmental equity is evidenced by his continuous work on programs that reach low-income populations. His vision of energy efficiency justice drove the creation of Energy Finance Solutions in 1996. Since then, he continued to be a strong advocate for breaking down energy efficiency barriers and has made remarkable contributions to WECC’s portfolio of limited-income programs.

Other noteworthy achievements include helping to design the original program applications for Focus on Energy, and working with a team of WECC staff to write the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant application.

George’s contributions to WECC and the energy efficiency industry are unmatched. We thank him for his many years of dedicated service, and wish him all the best in this next chapter!

But the benefits don’t end there: Enhancing our programs with the energyOrbit tool further streamlines administrative processes—making WECC’s program offerings more cost-effective than ever!

We’re excited to share that two WECC staff members have recently assumed new Board of Directors positions with local sustainability organizations Sustain Dane and Dane Buy Local.

Robin Lisowski, Director of New Business, was named President of Sustain Dane’s Board of Directors this January, having served on the board since 2015. Sustain Dane offers a variety of business and community programs, with the aim of establishing Dane County as a national leader in sustainability. WECC is a Sustain Dane member and supporter of their annual Badger Bioneers Conference. Additionally, WECC graduated from Sustain Dane’s MPower Business Champion program in 2016.

Robin has 20 years of operational and sustainability leadership experience, and is an advocate for sustainable development, both personally and professionally. In her role at WECC, Robin directs the development of emerging market products, designing innovative programs that result in reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Robin also serves as WECC’s sustainability officer, and led efforts to support WECC in achieving a net zero carbon footprint two years in a row.

Also in January, Dan Streit joined the Board of Directors of Dane Buy Local. Dane Buy Local works to promote development of local businesses, and encourage consumers to purchase goods and services locally.

As WECC’s Program Manager for Environmental Sustainability Services, Dan is responsible for developing and implementing programs for corporate and local government clients to improve supply chain sustainability and calculate their carbon footprints. Due to the many environmental benefits of purchasing locally, Dan’s partnership with Dane Buy Local is a perfect fit.

Dan has been involved with Dane Buy Local since 2016, when WECC became a member. As part of his board responsibilities, Dan serves on the Membership Committee, where he helps to recruit and onboard new individual and business members.

We’re thrilled to be partnered with Sustain Dane and Dane Buy Local, and are excited for their continued accomplishments in the Madison area.

We’re excited to announce PACE Wisconsin has approved financing to fund energy efficiency upgrades for the Hotel Indigo (Madison) and Hotel Retlaw (Fond du Lac) redevelopment projects!

WECC’s Energy Finance Solutions (EFS) administers the PACE Wisconsin program, which facilitates low-cost, long-term loans for commercial energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water conservation improvements. The program’s unique financing model—which includes no up-front, out-of-pocket costs—stimulates the revitalization of aging, inefficient buildings which would otherwise remain stagnant.

Congratulations to Justin on his new position as Treasurer for the Wisconsin Chapter of the Association of Energy Services Professionals’ (AESP) Board of Directors! AESP is a member-based association dedicated to advancing the energy industry through professional development and mentoring programs, networking, and knowledge sharing.

Justin is a Senior Energy Research Analyst at WECC, where he focuses on energy efficiency program design and strategy, as well as emerging technology and market research. He is currently leading an effort to identify beneficial electrification pathways for utilities with an initial emphasis on heat pump technologies.

Assuming a leadership role in AESP is a natural next step in Justin’s professional path. He began his energy career in community solar business development in Minnesota, and returned to his hometown of Madison in 2015 to complete a Master’s Degree in the newly-founded Resource Energy Demand Analysis (REDA) program at the University of Wisconsin—Madison.  

“It was a natural progression for me to graduate from REDA’s hands-on culture, to my current job at WECC, and now as a member of the AESP Wisconsin Board,” Justin said. “Sharing knowledge and improving the industry is what both REDA and AESP are all about. While on the Board, I hope to contribute to new and creative ways to engage the highly accomplished and diverse group of Wisconsin energy professionals.”

Justin joined AESP in 2016, and was honored with the New Professional Scholarship at the 2017 National Conference. He first became involved with the Wisconsin Chapter by volunteering to emcee the Chapter’s inaugural “Switch” event this past September.

We are thrilled to be named a Green Master for the second year in a row by the Wisconsin Sustainability Council! 

The Green Masters Program is a recognition and assessment program for Wisconsin businesses interested in improving and promoting their sustainability initiatives. The objective of the program is to provide companies with a benchmark for themselves while comparing their sustainability performance to other organizations. The program measures sustainability in nine key areas: energy, carbon and other emissions, water, waste and materials management, transportation, supply chain, community and educational outreach, workforce, and governance.

Green Masters is a points-based program, set up to encourage continuous improvement by establishing three levels of participation: Green Apprentice, Green Professional, and Green Master. In order to achieve Green Master level, companies must score in the top 20 percent of participating businesses.

As we continually seek to advance our corporate sustainability initiatives, we were excited to learn that our overall score increased from 587 to 606 since 2016!
