MADISON, Wis. (November 27, 2006) - Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation (WECC) installed the largest
customer-sited solar electric (Photovoltaic or PV) system in Dane County at its new office facility, currently under
construction, in Madison's University Research Park. The PV system is one of many renewable energy and energy
efficiency technologies the corporation will install at its new headquarters.
WECC is a national leader in the design and administration of energy efficiency and renewable energy programs and
the organization plans to feature many of the most efficient technologies commercially available in its new office
facility. According to Janet Brandt, Executive Director, WECC hopes to demonstrate how other businesses in the state
can incorporate sustainable design and "green" technologies in their buildings to reduce energy use, increase
productivity, decrease lifecycle costs, and positively impact the environment. "We're excited to share our story with
other companies throughout Wisconsin. Our facility will be a great "show and tell" for how to build a high-performance
office building with a very affordable price tag," said Brandt.
The 19 kilowatt PV system will be the largest such installation in Dane County and the third largest in the state.
It will be composed of two pole-mounted solar arrays on Whitney Way, two pole-mounted solar arrays in the WECC
parking lot and a large solar array on the roof of the two-story building. The system is engineered and installed
by Madison's Seventh Generation Energy Systems. Conergy, Inc. of Santa Fe, New Mexico is providing the Suntech
Power solar electric modules. The inverters, which convert direct current power from the solar arrays to alternating
current, are provided by Power-One of Camarillo, California. A solar water heating system donated by Hot Water
Products of Milwaukee and installed by Seventh Generation Energy Systems will also be located on the facility.
The 34,500 square foot WECC headquarters is being designed to achieve a Gold Level certification through the U.S.
Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The new office building's high-performance
design demonstrates a truly "green" facility. Key LEED features include minimal site disturbance, optimal daylight
provided to 75 percent or more of the work spaces, water efficient landscaping and plumbing fixtures, and energy
efficient mechanical systems with commissioning for longterm system performance. In addition, at least 75 percent
of construction waste will be recycled.
