History and timeline

When WECC began in 1980, the energy efficiency landscape looked quite different than it does today. Rising fuel prices and temporary fuel shortages were driving an increased awareness of the importance of energy efficiency, but energy customers had few off-the-shelf options for efficiency and the reliability of various energy efficiency and renewable options was still untested.

WECC's founders saw that the time was right to do something, and we began to reach out to the people and organizations that could help us make improved energy efficiency a reality.

We partnered with private businesses who develop, sell and install energy efficient goods and services. We worked with government agencies and utilities who could help to sponsor energy programs and impact energy policy. We participated in a variety of research projects to verify the efficacy of efficiency options. And we identified consumer agencies who could help us to educate and motivate the public to demand and use energy efficient products.

Over the past three decades, WECC has played a critical role in changing the energy and energy efficiency landscape in Wisconsin and the Midwest.

But there's still much to be done.
