Chief External Affairs Officer, Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (SMMPA)
Chris joined WECC’s Board of Directors in 2017, boasting more than 35 years of utility, federal regulation, and energy advisory experience in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Washington, D.C. Currently serving as Chief External Affairs Officer at SMMPA, Chris is responsible for developing and managing key relationships while also overseeing communications, human resource functions, demand side management initiatives, and more. SMMPA’s member utilities serve more than 100,000 total customers throughout southern Minnesota.
Prior to joining SMMPA, Chris spent four years in Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s administration as Deputy Secretary of the Department of Administration. In this role, Chris served as Chief Energy Advisor to the Governor, while also developing and managing the Department’s $1.2 billion budget.
Chris has strong roots in the utility industry, having spent 10 years at Alliant Energy and 20 years at We Energies. Over the course of those 30 years, Chris fulfilled a wide range of roles, spanning strategic and financial communications, federal regulatory affairs, investor relations, and sales. Amongst many other accomplishments, Chris played a role in implementing the Energy Policy Act of 2005, and developed and implemented one of the country’s first and most successful green pricing initiatives in the mid-1990s.
